hmmmm...that may be my ue to be the first!! Shocked so lets talk 2550 talk then...Anyone got an opinion on it? I need something fairly high gain. the ideal tone would be something as found on an every time i die record.

I wonder if it's a 50 watt version of the 5150? will the 5150 be offered anytime soon? How about tube based buffered effect loop and reverb that are integrated rather than requiring a separate unit?

Mid- to late-'80's gain.  Think hair metal.  Appetite for Destruction (maybe Kill 'em All) instead of Master of Puppets (Mesa).

It's not a big high-gain cascading preamp like a SLO, 5150 or Mesa.  It was Marshall's attempt to cheat for higher gain by adding a diode-clipping section, a la Rat or Distortion+, to a modded JCM 800.  By far, the most famous user is Slash, the Slash signature Marshall is just a modded 2550 RI...honestly, if it hadn't been for Slash, the model would have probably just been a footnote as being Marshall's 25th anniversary model (hence the name, Silver Jubilee), Marshall would move on to the JCM 900 shortly after.

IMHO, and others my contradict me, it doesn't have the tone and gain to match the clips on myspace.

No, as you might notice from my post above, it was the Marshall 25th anniversary model and, supposed, alo marked Jim marshalls 50th year in music...25/50...2550, officially called the Silver Jubilee.  It fits inbetween the JCM 800 and JCM 900 in amp lineage.  From 1987, it predated the 5150 by about 4 years nd the two have nothing in common.

I ordered the 2550 Kit #2 and received it this week (the faceplates are coming later).  I'm about half done with its assembly.  This is my third Ceriatone build (DC30 and OTS).  I'll try to post a sound clip when it's ready.

Another big fan of the Silver Jubilee is Joe Bonamassa. His tone is impeccable. He mixes other amps with the 2550, but it is the one amp that is always on.

Check out more of Joes' music on Youtube.

I finally sold another head, so I can order my Ceriatone 2550. I am psyched and I will report back once I get a chance to play it.

For clarification, the Marshall 2555 is the 100 watt head; the 2550 is the 50-watt head. These were introduced as the Silver Jubilee Series & carried over for two years after that as the Custom Tube Series. Joe Bonamassa is a 2555 Jubilee user; until recently, Steve Morse used a 2555 Jubilee as a staple in his rig. Now he has his own ENGL model.
FYI guys.....the Marshall 2555/2550 models had half-power switches which switched between pentode & triode mode, allowing a 100-watt amp to operate @ 50-watts & the 50-watt amp to run @ 25 watts. I don't see this feature on Nik's schematic.

It's there.

Pentode/triode is totally useless, IMHO, in triode mode, everything goes to mush -- clarity and definition become mud, picking dynamics are compromised, and the distortion is just a spongy mess.

That seems to be the general result with most triode/pentode switchable amps. Some loss in tone quality, anyway.
Maybe there is a better tube than the one supplied for it. A long tail pair??? Might be worth looking into.
