If you could only run your Plexi 50 through one speaker what would it be? I'm just thinking about a 2x12 stereo cab with my OTS driving the EV and the Plexi driving something else.

If your going to run your Plexi at high volume you're going to need a high wattage speaker perhaps 100 watts. I know that Weber makes British styled speakers that run upwards of 100 watts as does Eminence. Celestion has higher wattage speakers that might work fine. Most of the speaker websites have soundclips so you can listen to prospective choices. I would probably go through a Weber V30 type that is rated for high wattage. You may have to go on the Weber website because even though SpeakerTone.com stocks Weber's they only have one British toned speaker that is rated at 100 watts the Alnico Blue Dog. They have plenty of 50 watters if you are playing lower volume with a distortion unit.

I have an Eminence Tonespotter in with my EV at the moment and I don't think, though I don't recall, that that is high enough wattage. I've also got a Emi Texas Heat which is 100w I think, not sure it would be the right speaker for a plexi though.

What I'm asking  really is what will give the same tone as a good old greenback but with 75-100watt capability.

I would go with either the Weber British series ceramic Silver Bell or the Scumback M75 both come in higher wattage versions. Because you are pumping quite a few watts into one speaker you should be able to get it to break up somewhat like a greenback. However, the bottom end should be cleaner than with a greenback.

Thanks for that. I do think I'm going to struggle to find either of those here in the UK though.

Can you get Eminence in the UK ?
I have used The Tonker in several Twin Reverbs. They are a heavy magnet speaker, and can take quite a bit of power. The Lynch V12 might also be a good choice if you are concerned about blowing up a single 12" speaker.

Thanks for the links. I was able to find the specs on my Texas Heat and thats 150watt so I think I'll give that a go to begin with and then take it from there,

Also have a look at Warehouse Guitar Speakers. I bought 4 ET65's off them which are a clone of Celestion G1265's.

So far I have only used 2 of them in my 2x12 Fender Supersonic cab and they sound far better than the Celestion Vintage 30's that were in it.

I have nearly finished restoring my 4x12 cab which they will end up in, but I too am looking for either a Plexi 50 or 2550 kit from Nik and running it with my HRM

WGS do clones of just about everything British and American. I paid US$65 each and even with shipping to Australia it was cheaper than getting the 4 Celestion speakers that came with the 4x12 reconed.

I'm using eminence wizard and governor in my 2x12. If I had to choose just one I would prob. get the gov. as the wizard can be a little bright on it's own.

My wife owned a backline company. The Governor/Wizard was our default speaker combo in a 2x12 or 4x12. And I would agree with you about single speaker use as well. No single speaker is always the right choice, but I would take the Governor over the Wizard in most 1x12 requirements.

You are right hired hand, when I used my wizard alone in my set-up I found it had two basic qualities right off the bat IMHO. 1 a weapon of war, 2 a testing device for the intinsic stability of glass. HA!
