Title: Fun days ahead...
Post by: mcinku on November 20, 2008, 07:28:52 AM

Believe it or not this is going to be my first build.   :o
...but I have a really good amp tech standing by... just in case  ;)

With my OTS build I took it to my tech to power it up and check all the voltages. I didn't want to risk blowing anything serious. Worth it for peace of mind.

Have fun. Much more rewarding that just buying one!

I think I will do the same,... if I can resist the urge to power it right after last solder is done.

Lead dress, and anybody vaguely related to lead dress, will be very important. The presence knob can be another source of trouble for the TW. Component changes at any location can garner huge results also. Have as many pre tubes as possible on hand. Get some chopsticks.
Good Luck  :)

Thanks for the tips...

Yesterday I was able to install tube sockets, wire the heaters and install the pots and solder the brass rod.
I must take a photo of it  ;)

All I can say, this is not as easy as it looks.
 :)

congrats mcinku!
It really is fun to build your own.
I've build 3 amps so far. (all ceriatone)
A DC30, 5E3 and last week I finished my OTS (still need to make a headshell though)
Beware, It's addictive.  ;)

Pix please  ;D

This is probably not going to be the prettiest wiring around but hopefully it will sound good.

Man I'm having fun here...
Did some more work, installed the trannys, and wire those up along with the power cable and I also wired power tube sockets (almost)

I managed to wire the main board tonight. Must find some shielded cable to wire the input jack.

...not perfect but I'm happy. ;)

It seems there is a better way to wire the bright switch. Experts told me this new way is better for the noise.

I just finished wiring the power board, which means I'm done. Well not quite yet. Must find some shielding cable to wire V1 tube socket.

Can't wait to start up this baby... but I will have to wait a while.

Update:

I took my amp to a tech today and we started it up.
We found only one mistake... a little solder leaked into the V1 pin... it took 5min to solve that problem. ;)
Overall I was surprised how quite was the amp. It seems it's worth-while to be careful and neat with wiring.
The sound was just like it should be... big and dangerous!!

That's a rock amp to its bone.
 ;D

Well done. It does feel good doesn't it, all your own work (well a little bit of Niks!).

Im thinking ahead now as I'd sort of flagged one of these for the next but one build (DC-30 next), but could you do me a favour an measure the chassis. I'll be making a combo for something else in a few months time and it makes sense to get the wood cut for the Expression at the same time.

TIA

Hywel Harris
