Title: Bf champ squeal, clipping
Post by: Worny1 on July 01, 2015, 04:19:34 PM
Hi there. I'm a newbie and this is my first post. I hope I'm doing this correctly. I am returning to building after many ( about 40 ) years away. I first built a 5E1 using  classic tone trannys. I decided to add a Marshall style tone stack to the circuit. While the amp worked and actually sounded pretty good, when I would turn the volume all the way up it would clip and squeal. This began at about 3 o'clock volume position.

I tried many things to try to cure the problem, bias, different resistor and capacitor values etc. but nothing seemed to help. I knew that the problem seemed to be in the tone stack. So I decided to scrap the build and start over. I used the BF schematic on line and followed it exactly. I used Mercury trannys this time and premium caps and resistors. I have exactly the same problem! I have gone over and over this to make sure it's correct. I've changed tubes, put in a rectifier plug, all to no avail. I do know the problem is in the tone stack, because when I disconnect the stack it works great, just not the EQ I want. I know this is something I'm overlooking, but cannot figure this out! It seems like some tone stack interaction but to have it twice is baffling me.
I would greatl appreciate any help. Thank you!
